The Art of Becoming:  Char's Story​

Char's work begins with simple recurring subjects - most often florals - but it is not the subject alone that interests her rather its how she experiences it that is most inspiring.

​

Her unique approach favours exploration of a subject through multiple mediums which allows her to respond more fully and honestly to what she sees and is feeling. Rather than working in on consistent style she follows her instincts, preferring diversity and surprise over more predictable outcomes.

​

Collage is a process of gathering and arranging, like walking through a garden and bringing something home to hold onto. Oil paintings offers a slower, more immersive and impressionistic rich tactile experience which is deeply rooted in memory and warmth. Watercolours and ink capture immediacy - those first impressions of colour, light and emotion. Spontaneous, loose and influenced by an unrestricted reaction to what she sees.

Char often starts her process with gouache and paste studies, a way to begin to visualize larger paintings and the overall vision for the collection she is working on. These studies also serve as a method of understanding the shapes and structures she observes and where she would like to focus. 

​

Each of these approaches reveal something different and yet they are all part of the same conversation. To the untrained eye this may look like confusion but in reality it is a deliberate intention that keeps her work alive, layered, intriguing and surprising.

The path to understanding for Char is through the use of multiple mediums and styles. Its an inclusive approach, an ecosystem if expression.
